About my encaustics
Like my giclee prints on canvas and art papers, each encaustic work is inspired by one of my photographs.
The encaustic medium - beeswax, resin, and pigment - is applied in layers burned in with a torch in much the same manner perfected by the Greeks over 2,000 years ago.
My encaustic medium is 6 parts beeswax to 1 part damar resin ground in a traditional Mexican molcajete, heated and strained. I paint with natural bristle brushes from a hot palette, mixing and blending pigments and medium directly on the palette as the work progresses.
Encaustics are among the most durable of paintings - and will remain luminous for hundreds of years with periodic buffing and protection from temperatures above 43°C/110°F.
